Istanbul Department (türkçe)

The Department was founded on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Institute in 1929, but it had predecessors that served as stations for excavations conducted on the western coast. Since 1989, the department has been accommodated in a portion of the building that once served as the German embassy (today the German Consulate Istanbul). Its field of research includes projects ranging from prehistoric Asia Minor and Thrace to the Ottoman period.

Photo Archives

The photo archives consist of about 120,000 images, 65,000 negatives, including 2,500 historic photographs. The Pergamon Archive contains ca. 50,000 photographs.

Further Activities and Projects

Netzwerk "Epochenwandel und historische Veränderungssprozesse in Anatolien"

Nach dem Abschluß des ersten Netzwerkprojekts unter dem Titel "Manifestationen von Macht und Hierarchien in Stadtraum und Landschaft" ist an der Abteilung Istanbul des Deutschen Archäologischen Instituts ein neues wissenschaftliches Netzwerk zum Thema "Epochenwandel und historische Veränderungssprozesse in Anatolien" eingerichtet worden. In den Jahren 2009 und 2010 sollen zu diesem Thema Projekte von Mitarbeitern und Stipendiaten der Abteilung sowie von auswärtigen Kolleginnen und Kollegen methodisch und inhaltlich zusammenführt werden. Ziel des Schwerpunktes ist es wie schon bei dem Vorgängerprojekt, das spezifische Profil der Abteilung für die Nachwuchsförderung zu nutzen und wissenschaftliche Synergien auf dem Gebiet der archäologischen Forschung zu erzielen. Das Netzwerk schließt sich thematisch an das Forschungscluster 3 "Politische Räume" des DAI an.

Türkei-Kurs
In Anlehnung an den von 1991 - 2000 durchgeführten Attika-Kurs haben die Abteilungen Athen und Istanbul des Deutschen Archäologischen Institutes im April 2006 einen Fortbildungskurs für Nachwuchswissenschaftler aus der Türkei, Griechenland und Deutschland zum Rahmenthema "Ionische Heiligtümer" durchgeführt. Ziel der Veranstaltung war die interdisziplinäre Diskussion altertumswissenschaftlicher Fragestellungen zwischen dem DAI und Kolleginnen und Kollegen von den Hochschulen. Dementsprechend waren Hochschullehrer der Fächer Alte Geschichte und Altphilologie an der Konzeption und Leitung der Veranstaltung beteiligt. In Zukunft soll dieses Vorhaben auf andere kleinasiatische Landschaften ausgedehnt und auch in Kooperationen mit anderen Institutionen durchgeführt werden.

Public Relations

During the winter season a series of public evening lectures is intended to inform the public on the current research of scientists from Turkey and abroad. A second series of lectures, the so-called 'Hauskolloquien', gives young scientists the opportunity to present the results of their latest investigations. In addition, in early spring a series of guided tours to monuments, city quarters and museums in Istanbul takes place (for detailed information on the schedules see above)
