Rome Department (italiano)

The Rome Department of the German Archaeological Institute arose from the >Instituto di Corrispindenza Archeologica< that was formally founded on April 21, 1829, the day of the ancient Roman Palilia Festival. In accordance with its founding principles, its original primary task focused on the collection and publication of archaeological discoveries and monuments which in the area of classical antiquity brought forth numerous finds. However, in the course of time the main focus of its scientific activities has changed. Since the reopening of the Rome Department after World War II, field research has gained an increasingly larger role in its scholarly pursuits. In Italy, the Institute has never undertaken large independent excavations. To this day, it reflects the role of the Institute in Rome that excavations are undertaken in cooperation with Italian institutions. The dialogue and exchange between experts from all nations, as was promoted by the original >Korrespondenz Institut<, is especially maintained and encouraged. The Rome Department of the Institute is a member of the ?Associazione Internazionale di Archeologia Classica? (AIAC) and the ?Unione Internazionale degli Instituti di Archeologia, Storia e Storia dell?Arte in Roma?.

Library

The library collection, the largest German library focusing on antiquity, includes all areas of the study of classical antiquity as well as its associate disciplines.  

Photo Library

The photo collection includes images of all types of monuments from the Greek and Roman period mainly found in Italy.  

Archives / Collections

The archives house the estates of important archaeologists, the letters of scholars and original drawings mainly from the 19th century.  

Publications

The ?Mitteilungen des Deutschen Archäologischen Instituts, Römische Abteilung?, appears yearly and the ?Ergänzungshefte?, ?Sonderschriften?, ?Palilia?, Monographien, ?Bilderhefte? and monographs in periodic series. The various publications of the Rome Department provide the editorial work.

DAI Events

Scholarly lectures are held for special audiences twice a year on a regular basis (on Winckelmann Day and on the day of the Palilia Festival), official public addresses at greater intervals, as well as academic colloquia and small exhibitions. For a wider audience, tours of Rome and its vicinity are offered. The Pompeii Course, a traditional endeavor of the Rome Department, is an intensive course for high school (Gymnasium) teachers on the archaeological monuments of the cities in the vicinity of Vesuvius.

Antikenrezeption Anhand ausgesuchter antiker Bauten und topographischer Situationen, die unter dem Faschismus eine Neunutzung oder Neubestimmung erhalten haben, wird versucht, den Anteil, den die Klassische Archäologie bei deren Herrichtung zu neuen, meist propagandistischen Zwecken gespielt hat, herauszuarbeiten.
 
Columbarium des Scribonius Menophilus (Rom, via Aurelia Antica) (italiano) Vorlage des Gesamtkontextes von Architektur, Epigraphik sowie beweglicher und unbeweglicher Ausstattung
 
Italische Kulturen vom 7. bis 3. Jh. v.Chr. Das Schwerpunktprogramm (Ende 2005 bis Ende 2008) sieht die Erforschung und Darstellung der italischen und sizilischen Kulturen unter besonderer Berücksichtigung ihrer Beziehungen zu den Städten der Magna Graecia vor. Es soll ein Entwicklungsmodell erarbeitet werden, in das aktuelle Fragestellungen zur kulturellen Identität und zur Perzeption des Fremden, zur Mentalitätsgeschichte und zur gesamten Breite der Lebenswelten einfließen.

Syracuse The project is under the auspices of the Magna Graecia Department of the Deutsches Archäologisches Institut Rome Section.
 
Teano (italiano) Zeichnerische Aufnahme und baugeschichtliche Erforschung sollen eine Rekonstruktion sowie Erkenntnisse zu funktionalen Aspekten des Theaters von Teano liefern. Darüber hinaus soll die Bedeutung der Theaterbauten im Süden Italiens kulturhistorisch behandelt werden.
