Baghdad Branch of the Orient Department

The Baghdad Branch was founded in 1955 as the Baghdad Department and has been a part of the Orient Department since 1996. With its establishment, a constant, and very fruitful tradition of German archaeological research in Iraq has been persued and administrated. It's working focus encompasses Mesopotamian cultures from prehistoric times to the Islamic Middle Ages. The Branch is currently directed from Berlin.

Library

Reference library with approx. 500 volumes and 15 periodicals. 

Photo Library

The photo collection covers all classes of monument, from the early Bronze Age to the Islamic Era, principally in Syria, the main focus of it being documentation of the Institute's excavation projects. 

Archives / Collections

The branch office posesses an extensive study collection of archaeological finds from Uruk-Warka. Small finds, ceramics and test materials were received by Heidelberg during the 50s and 60s as part of the official division of finds with the Iraq Museum in Baghdad. The collection is curated by the University of Heidelberg and open to the general public. 

Publications

The Baghdader Mitteilungen(Baghdad Disclosures) appears annually, and the Baghdader Forschungen(Baghdad Research) series is produced at irregular intervals. Ausgrabungen in Uruk-Warka, Endberichte, Endberichte (Excavations in Uruk-Warka, Final Reports) will be published as a further series.

Current Projects

Irak, Tell Harmal 1997 bis 1999 führte Dr. Peter Miglus im Auftrag der Orient-Abteilung und mit Unterstützung des irakischen Antikendienstes, vertreten durch Laith M. Hussein, M.A. Ausgrabungen am Tell Harmal im Stadtgebiet von Bagdad durch.
 
Sippar (Tell Abu Habbah) Die Orient-Abteilung ergänzt die langjährigen archäologischen Forschungen der Universität Baghdad im antiken Sippar durch gezielte Ausbildungsprojekte.
 
Uruk (Warka) Stadtforschung in der Metropole des legendären König Gilgamesch (5. Jt. v. Chr. - 4. Jh. n. Chr.)
 
Wadi Hauran Regionalsurvey im Wadi Hauran (Westiraq) mit neuen Befunden zur Nutzung und Besiedlung des Wadis im präkeramischen Neolithikum (7./6. Jt. v. Chr.) sowie zur Anwesenheit von Nomaden seit der 2. Hälfte des 1. Jt. v. Chr.
