The library's collection encompass all branches of the study of Classical Antiquity, as well as related disciplines.

Inventory

The library collection consists of approximately 210,000 volumes, 1,895 journals, including circa 1,000 current journals. The library collection focuses on the archaeology of the Mediterranean World, but is supplemented with related disciplines, such as classical philology, ancient history, archaeology of the Roman provinces, archaeology of the Near East and Egyptology.

Library access

The library is accessible to scholars that have at least a Masters or equivalent degree in one of the subjects in which the library is specialised (archaeology, classical philology, ancient history etc.). A Bachelor's or equivalent degree is not considered sufficient. Students may apply for a three month access to finish their Master thesis presenting a letter of recommendation by their professor.

On request and in accordance with the library, special access can be granted also to other individuals for the consultation of material that is not available in other libraries.

Catalogue

The online catalogue is part of the central DAI catalogue which is called "Zentraler Online Katalog (ZENON) DAI". It is accessible at http://opac.dainst.org and contains all publications of the DAI Rome starting from 1996, all journals and approximately 80% of the monographs published until 1995. The ZENON catalogue also contains the complete "Archaeological Bibliografy" (formerly DYABOLA), an overview of books and articles maintained by the DAI since 1956.

The computers in the reading rooms can be used to consult the catalogue. It is also possible to access the catalogue on your own laptop via the wireless-lan connection of the Institute.

The current arrangement of the library

During the restoration of the DAI Institute at Via Sardegna, the library is temporarily located at Via Curtatone 4d, 00185 Rome. There is a reading room with 64 workplaces and only part of the library collection is present.

Due to a lack of space, many books are stored in a repository outside the city. It is possible, however, to have them delivered to the reading room if they are ordered a day in advance. To find out which books are in the library and which ones in the repository, please click here.

Loan

The DAI library is an non-circulating library. Books may therefore not be checked out.

Photocopies and reproductions

It is possible to photocopy book sections and journal articles at a charge, respecting the copyright laws. Some books cannot be photocopied, however, for preservation reasons. Alternatively, there is a copy stand available for readers to photograph books with their own camera. It is not allowed to use a portable scanner in the reading room.

Archive

The archive material documents the research history and history of the Institute from its foundation in 1829 until recently. In particular, it contains a rich collection of letters of famous members and correspondents of the Institute of the 19th century, legacies of directors and collaborators and an outstanding collection of drawings, tracings, aquarelles and plans of archaeological sites and ancient objects, mainly from Italy. A part of the documentation has been published in the series "Das Deutsche Archäologische Institut, Geschichte und Dokumente.” The archive is currently located in the repository outside Rome and can only be consulted in agreement with the library direction.
