The archives are classified in three groups: 1) Photo library, 2) Archives of drawings and plans, and 3) Research archive.
In addition to the photo archives – photo archive (photo library and negatives archive) and archive of drawings (plans, object drawings and finds directories) – there is also the research archive of written records of research expeditions and excavations, which can contain important information about the history of research and understanding of images. On the one hand, it deals with the scientific donations of former researchers who worked at the Department or have dealt with issues that are closely related to the research of the Department. On the other, the scientific documentation and drawings of the institute's own activities and projects are kept there.
Since the reconstruction work at the Department in 2011, all archives are kept in the basement of the building on Calle Serrano 157 (due to current building work public access is not possible until further notice).
