Damascus Branch of the Orient Department

Founded in 1980 this office is devoted to research on archaeological monuments that date from prehistoric to modern times. All projects of the office are carried out in cooperation with the Direction Générale des Antiquités et des Musées de la Syrie (DGAMS). Since its establishment the Damascus branch office maintains an active dialogue with international scholars of this field.

Library

The sphere of collections in the library of the Damascus office encompasses publications about the following fields: prehistoric archaeology, Near Eastern archaeology, classical archaeology, archaeology of the Roman provinces, Christian archaeology as well as Islamic archaeology and art history. To date the library holds c. 14,000 volumes.

Photo Archives

Analogous photographic data is available for numerous categories of monuments and material in Syria and Lebanon, dating from the time of early civilisations to the Islamic period. Digital image data have been collected comprehensively since 2002. The photothek is focused upon documentation of projects of the Damascus office.

Publications

The journal Damaszener Mitteilungen has been issued since 1983, augmented since 1988 by the series of journals Damaszener Forschungen. Commencing in 2008 reports from the Damascus office will appear in the new journal Zeitschrift für Orient-Archäologie under the heading Levante. The journal Damaszener Mitteilungen, in turn, will be discontinued after the issue of volume 15.

Events

Several times during the year lectures and talks on research projects and new discoveries of the German Archaeological Institute as well as other German institutions are held in the Damascus office for the general public. Further, current projects of the Damascus office are reported to the staff members and to the broader public as well.

The German Archaeological Institute (DAI) is a »scientific corporation« of the Federal Institution under the auspices of the Foreign Office. The staff of the Institute carries out research in the area of archaeology and in related fields and maintains relations with international scholars.
Furthermore, it organizes congresses, colloquia and tours, and informs the public through the media about its work.
