The Department was founded on the 1st of January 1995. It arose fundamentally from the Institute's earlier activities in the research of pre- and ancient history. On the first of January 1996 it was combined with the former Tehran Department. It's research today is based on the region enclosed by the CIS states and the neighbouring countries to the South (Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Mongolia and China), from prehistoric times until Middle Ages.
