The Commission was founded in 1979 on the occasion of the Institute's 150th anniversary. It concerns itself with archaeological research, principally in Asia, Africa and the Americas. It's scientific goal is to shed light on and provide archaeological support for historical research outside Europe and the classical civilizations. This is done with a range of interdisciplinary subjects through research and individual excavation projects abroad in close co-operation with the scientific institutions of the host country.

Library

The library's collection contains literature on archaeology and ancient art history in Latin America, Africa and Asia with a focus on East, South and Central Asia. It also has a lot of literature on theoretical archaeology and comparative studies.

Publications

»Beiträge zur Allgemeinen und Vergleichenden Archäologie«(Articles on General and Comparative Archaeology) appears yearly. The monograph series »Forschungen zur Allgemeinen und Vergleichenden Archäologie« (Research in General and Comparative Archaeology), »Kolloquien zur Allgemeinen und Vergleichenden Archäologie« (Discussions in General and Comparative Archaeology), and »Materialien zur Allgemeinen und Vergleichenden Archäologie«(Materials for General and Comparative Archaeology) are published irregularly.
