International conference on space, politics, culture and religion in the first millennium BC. DAI Istanbul, in cooperation with Koç University, Research Center for Anatolian Civilizations, and Excellence Cluster TOPOI: 1.-3.6.2009
The tumulus is one of the most widespread burial types in the ancient world. In recent years, a number of studies on tumuli have clearly revealed that this burial type is common in many areas of the ancient world. Although each region displays its own characteristics, it seems that some common issues emerge. As a result, there is a growing need to engage in cross-disciplinary discussions.
The aim of this symposium consists in bringing together specialists from Mediterranean and Black Sea regions in order to present most recent research on tumuli during the 1st millennium B.C. and their eastern Kurgan neighbors. Discussions will emphasize the cultural aspects within each region, as well as interactions among cultures. The speakers will have to address one of the three themes: the tumulus as an attraction point (reusing tumulus, cultic activity), the tumulus and landscape (landmark, defining space) and the tumulus as a socio-cultural phenomenon (cultural interactions, defining identity). These topics can be approached through regional or interregional discussions of new and/or already published materials. Participants are encouraged to apply interdisciplinary approaches.
