Connecting ARcheology and ARchitecture in Europeana

The DAI participates via the online database iDAI.images/Arachne as partner in the multinational European project CARARE. Subject of the project is to aggregate the digital content of the archaeological and architectural heritage that the partners hold and make it accessible through Europeana.

The DAI will provide the metadata and thumbnails of 120.000 historic photographs. Their glass plate negatives have been digitised for the larger part by the project EMAGINES. The metadata need to be reviewed and where necessary completed. The native metadata will be prepared for harvesting by mapping in CIDOC-CRM according to the specified metadata schema. Further on the data repository is to be configured for harvesting by CARARE using OAI-PMH.

The European Commission is funding up to 80% of the costs of the project by the ICT Policy Support Programme. This framework promotes an open, innovative and competitive digital economy redounding to an European information society. Among others digital libraries and Europeana in particular shall be advanced.

@ DAIThe consortium of the CARARE project consists of 29 partners from 20 countries including heritage agencies, ministries, archaeology museums, research institutes, digital archives and technology providers. The project is co-ordinated by Kulturarvsstyrelsen, the Heritage Agency of Denmark, with MDR-Partners, a leading specialist partnership working together with cultural organisations.

The German Archaeological Institute (DAI) is a »scientific corporation« of the Federal Institution under the auspices of the Foreign Office. The staff of the Institute carries out research in the area of archaeology and in related fields and maintains relations with international scholars.
Furthermore, it organizes congresses, colloquia and tours, and informs the public through the media about its work.
