CIL XVII

Edition of the Roman Milestones

History of Research

Gerold Walser, the late Bernese classical scholar, had already initiated the edition of the milestones of the Imperium Romanum a fairly long time ago. The project has been since part of the Corpus Inscriptionum Latinarum (CIL) issued by the Berlin-Brandenburgischen Akademie der Wissenschaften.

Previous Activities

Volume XVII has been planned to consist of several fascicles, covering the entire territory of the Roman Empire. G. Walser had managed to publish one of them himself.

Recent Activities

fig.1 Milestone © DAiSome years ago, Hans-Joachim Gehrke and Anne Kolb (University of Zurich) started to continue the project. It is of peculiar importance not only for the research of communication and its ways in the Imperium Romanum, but also for the organisation of the Roman Empire and ancient geography and topography in general. For this reason, the project is connected through the BBAW to the Berlin Excellence Cluster TOPOI, too.

Results

A second fascicle is currently printing.
