Library - Information for Users
The library is an open-access, open stack, non-circulating, reference library. Books may not be checked out. Limited photocopying is possible in the library. The use of scanners in the reading room is not permitted.
The library is open to all researchers of the fields of Classical Antiquity and other academic disciplines. Students preparing for their final university exams may request to use the library for a period of three months. To do so they should contact the Department and present a letter of recommendation from their university.
All periodicals and monographs published from 1996 onward and approximately sixty percent of older monographs can be located in the central online catalogue of the DAI (ZENON DAI). The catalogue can be accessed from the computers in the reading room and is also available online. Monographs up to 1995 can also be located in the card catalogue. Eventually all resources will be accessible through the online catalogue.
The library is non-circulating.
Opening Hours
Attention: On account of construction work the library is currently closed. Due to space constraints the limited library staff in the Villino Amelung are unfortunately no longer able to operate until further notice (effective June 9, 2008).
Inventory and Coverage
The collection encompasses approximately 210,000 volumes, 1,895 periodicals, including 1,115 current periodicals. The collection focuses on Mediterranean Archeology, supplemented with a broad section of literature for related fields, particularly Classical Philology and Ancient History. Works relating to Near-Eastern Archeology, Egyptology, Pre-history and Provincial Roman Archeology supplement the collection.
The German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft) supports the collection of "Early Christian and Early Byzantine Art." The library's unique significance has resulted from the range of disciplines that its collection encompasses, as well as its rich collection of older works from the 16th to the 19th century. Adjoined to the Department's library is the Bibliotheca Platneriana, a special collection of about 5,000 volumes comprising of older literature, particularly relevant to the history of Italian cities.
Archaeological Bibliography
The subject catalogue of the collection up to 1925 can be consulted at the library (Mau-Matz- Mercklin.) From 1956 onwards all monographs, articles in periodicals, congress reports, sammelwerke, and festschrifts are included. The bibliography also catalogues literature relating to the fields of Classical Archeology, Early Christian and Early Byzantine Art History, Epigraphy, Numismatics, Ancient History and Pre-/Early History of Mediterranean countries. The ZENON DAI "Systematic search tool (Thesaurus)" allows for a systematic search of this bibliographical material.
