The library holds an exquisite collection of historic travel literature. |
Inventory and Coverage
The Institute's Library comprises ca. 31.000 titles in nearly 40.000 volumes and about 300 periodicals and series currently. The main focus of the collection is on Egyptology in the broadest sense and associated sciences; it is supplemented by an extensive Islamic collection and an exquisite collection of old travel literature. In addition, the library includes about 3,000 special offprints, maps and non-book-media such as microfiche, CD-ROMs etc. The core of the Library is the 1957 acquired collection of the Egyptologist Ludwig Keimer (1892-1957) whose papers are preserved in the Institute's archive.
Indexing
The collection is organized by subject and is on open access. The card catalogue in alphabetical order has ceased in 2003 and was substituted by a database available locally and online. Since April 2010 all titles of the Library can be researched in ZENON, the central online catalogue of the German Archaeological Institute.
Services
The Library is a reference library only; material may not be borrowed. Access is granted to all scientists and students of relevant disciplines. Guests coming from a distance are encouraged to make a prior appointment by e-mail. A computer workstation with internet connection is available as well as 18 reader desks. A limited number of photocopies may be made and are charged at 1 LE per page.
