Previous Activities
Research on the sanctuary of Zeus Hellanios on the island of Aegina, initially conducted in 1905 and 1933 by German archaeologists (A. Furtwängler and G. Welter) and as yet unpublished, is expected to be reprocessed and along with further examinations will be brought to a close. At the same time, work will be wrapped up on the impressive architecture of the complete site. The project deals with the cult area located on the highest mountain of Aegina which historically is the most important religious center of the island. The ancient inhabitants, who gained importance in the 7th and 6th centuries B.C. through Mediterranean trade, 'exported' this cult from Naukratis, its trading base located on the Nile delta.
In addition to the excavations at Oros, other ancient settlement sites on Aegina, for example agricultural facilities or fortifications, will be examined.
In cooperation with the Inscriptiones Graecae (Akademie der Wissenschaften Berlin-Brandenburg), all inscriptions still located on the island of Aegina will be collected and copied for evaluation in order to create a framework of regional works and for a corpus publication.
