Colloquium on Late Antique and Early Islamic Archaeology in Bilad ash-Sham
vom 5.-9. November 2006 in Damaskus

Transformation Processes from Late Antiquity to Early Islam in Bilad al-Sham.
Since some time now, the results of archaeological fieldwork as well as the ongoing re-evaluation of older excavations have shed more light on the material side of the region's - historically well-attested - importance in the cultural transformation process from the 5th/6th to the 10th century. Over the last years, new data and discoveries have built a solid base from which to ask after continuity and discontinuity in fields such as art, architecture or the produce of arts and crafts, and to tackle questions of zones of influence and lines of tradition. Against this promising background, the German Archaeological Institute Damascus proposes to arrange a scientific colloquium in collaboration with the Syrian antiquities service. Presentation of a wide range of new results and of acute. problems of research will lead to an analysis of the above-mentioned aspects within the context of the latest research. The conference is kindly supported by the Gerda Henkel Foundation.
