Workshop zur Keramikherstellung in der späten Bronzezeit in Syro-Mesopotamien

Ausblick auf die benachbarten Regionen

Recent trends in the study of Late Bronze Age Ceramics in Syro-Mesopotamia and neighbouring regions - a workshop.

The international workshop "Recent trends in the study of Late Bronze Age Ceramics in Syro-Mesopotamia and neighbouring regions" is aimed at discussing results of the latest investigations on pottery of one specific phase of the history of the ancient Near East - the late second millennium BC - as well as evaluating and stimulating new research approaches in this field.

While some criteria for description of pottery - the most commonly found artefacts in any archaeological site in the Near East - have been established by the scientific community, our discipline still lacks a shared standard in the examination and identification of processes beyond the production of pottery (e.g. systematisation and innovation of morphology and technology) and even more of those beyond the use and meaning of ceramic material in the daily life of the ancient communities.

The numerous pottery studies in progress, mostly a result of the boom of excavations during the 80s and 90s of the last century, form a rich potential for a novel discussion aiming at comparing methods of research.

Questions such as the time, knowledge transfer and contact mechanisms that bring pottery corpora of different regions/areas to resemble each other or the social meaning in the different communities to be assigned to these resemblances as well as the chronological lapses that they might indicate will be addressed.

The Late Bronze Age offers an excellent opportunity for discussion of mechanisms of exchange, continuity and change, ruptures and parallel developments, "relations" (from trade to political and ethnic markers) in regional and supra-regional perspective, including an area that extends from Iran, Mesopotamia, Syria to the Levant and North West Arabia.

The workshop is organised by the Orient-Department of the German Archaeological Institute, Berlin, and the Institute of Oriental Studies of Vienna University. It is sponsored by the German Archaeological Institue, the Gerda Henkel Stiftung and the University of Vienna.
