NETconnect

NETconnect-project, promoted by the European Commission

3D-reconstuctions get more and more importance for the touristic and scientific presentation and interpretation of archaeological sites and their environment. NET-connect intends to combine both aspects, including historic paralleles between the three participiant projects Glauberg (Germany), Biskupin (Poland) and Magna Graeca (Italy) as well as modern similarities and contacts in research.

Location

Glauberg, Kreis Wetterau, Hesse

Departments:
Roman-Germanic Commission (RGK) Frankfurt a.M.

History

"Fürstensitze" & Umland
Deutschland, Glauburg-Glauberg

Objectives

The Glauberg-scenario developed at RGK Frankfurt includes the reconstruction of a virtual 3D-celtic Glauberg in consideration of current archaeological research. We aim to reach a visual description of the natural and cultural environment prehistoric man had to cope with respectively has caused himself. Graphic, educational and entertaining products are developed and modified for different media:
- A computer terminal is developed for the new "Keltenmuseum" at the Glauberg.
- A mobile guide system is to open up the Archaeological Park surrounding the museum.
- A web-presentation gives information about the site(s) to visitors of the www and is intended to function as a database-pool and web platform for discussion between developers and archaeologists.
Next to a graphic presentation the scientific use of virtual 3D-reconstruction for archaeological interpretation is evaluated as well.

History of Research

The pre- and protohistory of the Glauberg is subject of research for more than 100 years. The spectacular detection of richly endowed Celtic tombs of the 5th century and of the sandstone statue of the presumed "prince of the Glauberg" in 1994 has given a new impetus to research.Up to present interdisciplinary research projects have brought out amazing new results about prehistoric Glauberg. Two of these projects are worked at the RGK as well, being parts of the DFG-sponsored research programme "Fürstensitze"

Cooperation

Archaeological partners are the Universities of Warsaw and Consenza having in work Iron age central places of Biskupin (Poland) and the greek colonies in Italian Magna Graeca.
Technical support is provided by different start-up firms and institutions: VicomTech (San Sebastian), GraphiTech (Trento), "Digital Design Studio" of the Glasgow School of Arts and "Fraunhofer Institut für Graphische Datenverarbeitung" (IGD) in Darmstadt.
