The Stelae of the Islamic Necropolis of Aswan
Workshop of the German Archaeological Institute Cairo
Aswan, 13-15 February, 2010
In connection with its documentation and restoration work on the so-called Fatimid Cemetery in Aswan, the DAI Cairo is organising an international two-day workshop on the funeral stelae of the cemetery. While an unknown number of stelae are still in situ, many were already evacuated a century ago, and are now dispersed over locations in Egypt and abroad. Their number may total an estimated 4000 items. Because of this huge number, and because of the broad time span they cover (from the 1st century Higra/7th century CE until the 6th century H/12th century CE), these stelae constitute an outstanding, though largely neglected, epigraphical record with an enormous research potential for the study of the social, cultural and religious history of Aswan and its region in the transitional period from Late Antiquity into the Middle Ages. The workshop intends to bring together scholars from Egypt and abroad in order to lay the basis of a network that facilitates exchange and the necessary multilateral cooperation in a digitization project.
