Zeitschrift für Orient-Archäologie

In 1996 the German Archaeological Institute / Deutsches Archäologisches Institut (DAI) established a department of its own for Oriental Archaeology and, thus, concentrated its research projects on the Near East, which had been supervised by diverse institutions until then. The newly created Orient Department was assigned research work in Syria, Jordan, Iraq and Yemen. This change provided the basis for embarking more intensively upon research topics, whose approach not only demands the regional, but also an interregional perspective.

According to this objective, an ambitious research programme has been drafted in recent years in order to intensify even more the interconnection between the single projects within the Orient Department. Moreover, a strong emphasis has been placed upon crucial aspects of cultural development, which can now be studied in cooperation between the different DAI-departments. Owing to this achievement, new research projects could additionally be initiated in the Lebanon, Saudi Arabia and the Sultanate of Oman.

The Journal of Orient Archaeology/Zeitschrift für Orient-Archäologie (ZOrA) contains detailed and substantial contributions to recent international, archaeological research in the Levant, Mesopotamia and the Arabian Peninsula. ZOrA was created as a publication medium with the objective of focusing upon interregional research perspectives. As soon as ZOrA will be released, the former, regionally oriented journals of the Orient Department, the Baghdader Mitteilungen and Damaszener Mitteilungen, will not be continued. ZOrA will be published by the publishing house de Gruyter.

All authors, who wish to contribute to the archaeology and history of the aforementioned regions, are welcomed to the new journal. We especially look forward to syntheses and final reports. In addition, all DAI projects can contribute papers on current research projects.

A scientific advisory board will assess the quality of the papers, closely examine incoming manuscripts and recommend those publications to be printed. For general information as well as layout guidelines of ZOrA, please visit the homepage of the Orient Department. Publishing languages are German and English. ZOrA is edited in the Orient Department in Berlin.
