Stipends of the Gerda Henkel Foundation and the Elise and Annemarie Jacobi Foundation for Ancient History and Epigraphy at the DAI Munich

Graduate student scholarship

The financial support of the Gerda Henkel Foundation and the Elise-and-Annemarie-Jacobi-Foundation, in accordance with the will of Mrs. Annemarie Jacobi, makes it possible for the Commission to support graduate students "of outstanding ability and limited financial means" from all countries of the world who are currently preparing, completing or publishing dissertations in the field of Ancient History and closely associated fields. Research projects corresponding to the German concept of "Dissertation" will be taken into consideration (PhD, Thèse Nouveau Régime etc.).

The Commission hereby advertises scholarships for German and foreign PhD students to enable research stays at its library, which is excellently equipped for Ancient History. The planned stay should be of a duration of about two or three months. In addition to a work-place in the library, candidates will receive free accommodation in a fully furnished apartment on site, refund for their travel costs up to a maximum of EUR 350 (Europe) or EUR 900 (overseas), and a subsidy of EUR 600 per month for their living costs. The successful applicants have to be in residence at the Commission during their scholarship.

Applications in German, English, French, Spanish or Italian are to be accompanied by the following documents:

  1. A detailed description of the dissertation project (max. 5 pages) with details about the status of the work
  2. A working schedule for the stay in Munich
  3. The proposed duration and dates (with possible alternatives, perhaps even during the following period) for the stay in Munich,
  4. A curriculum vitae
  5. Copies of existing academic qualifications
  6. Letters of reference, one from the dissertation supervisor and one from another academic teacher

Applications can be addressed four times a year (until 1 January, 1 April, 1 July and 1 October) to the director of the Commission. They should be submitted at least six months before the planned beginning of the scholarship. Please send them electronically (as attachment or e.g. WeTransfer) as one data file to ursula.vedder@dainst.de or info.aek@dainst.de. We kindly ask referees to send their letters of reference (1 – 2 pages) separately to the same addresses.
