Research Scholarships

at the Head Office of the German Archaeological Institute (DAI)

In 2023, the DAI offers several research scholarships starting on 01.06.2023 at the earliest and lasting 1 to 7 months. The scholarships must be conducted within the year 2023, i.e. their duration may not exceed 31.12.2023.

The DAI’s mission is to carry out, promote, and publish worldwide research in the various archaeological disciplines and their adjacent specialties. The DAI endorses scholarly diversity and multidisciplinary research, along with international cooperation and the development of integrated investigation approaches. With its activities, the DAI contributes to the protection, preservation, and presentation of cultural heritage in Europe and worldwide. It sustains research infrastructures open to scholars from all countries. The DAI strives for unity between the archaeological disciplines in Germany and the classical studies in general as well as for the advancement of young scholars and scholarly exchange throughout Europe and the world. It thus sees itself as a significant operator in cultural relations, education, and foreign affairs.

Consistent with its statutory tasks, the DAI awards research scholarships to promote scholarly projects that meet with the interests of the German Archaeological Institute and directly link up with the tasks of the latter. The scholarship is awarded to well-demarcated, independent research projects and for the encouragement of scholarly exchange whose aim it is to significantly contribute along the lines of the German Archaeological Institute. The proposed research project must be directly connected to a DAI research project. The results obtained under a research scholarship are presented in a publication on the project.

In reaction to the ongoing Russian aggression against Ukraine and in accordance with the principles stated above, the DAI invites applications for projects within the DAI’s fields of work that aim at making a sustainable contribution to the DAI’s project “Documenting, Recording and Saving Ukrainian Archaeological Heritage”. Projects chosen for funding must present their results in a publication.

Ukrainian scholars are especially encouraged to apply. Proposals aiming at performing research in Ukraine will be given special consideration.

Applicants must hold a degree in the field of archaeology or a closely related discipline are eligible to apply. Remuneration is set at 2.050.-€ for PostDocs and 1.500.-€ for PreDocs. Further details are provided in the DAI guideline for fellowships.
