Call for Contributions Understanding Past Human–Environment Interactions in Anatolia

Since the earliest periods of human history, societies have continuously interacted with and shaped their environments. The 7th Research Network (2023–2025), organised by the Istanbul Department of the German Archaeological Institute (DAI) in collaboration with Koç University’s Research Center for Anatolian Civilizations (ANAMED) and Princeton University’s Climate Change and History Research Initiative (CCHRI), has foregrounded interdisciplinary approaches to the study of integrated human–environment systems. Building on this initiative, we invite contributions to a co-edited BYZAS volume examining past human–environment interactions in Anatolia from a socio-ecological perspective.

Moving beyond deterministic or collapse-centered models, the volume emphasises adaptation, resilience, feedback mechanisms, and multi-scalar dynamics across deep time. The Anatolian Peninsula is approached as a key comparative laboratory for advancing socio-ecological research in archaeology, environmental history, and human ecology.

We welcome empirically grounded and methodologically reflective contributions engaging with themes such as longue durée human–environment interactions, resilience and transformation, multi-scalar analysis, data integration, and critical discussions of uncertainty and inference.

The volume aims to advance conceptual and methodological approaches to socio-ecological systems in the past.
