International Conference in Istanbul, 4th-6th June 2018. Organized by NekroPergEol and Sarkophag-Corpus.

The conference is a collaboration between the collaborative French-German-Turkish program NekroPergEol, cofounded by the Agence National de la Recherche (ANR) and the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG), and the ›Corpus der römischen Sarkophage‹, a long-term project coordinated by an international board and the German Archaological Institute (DAI).

NekroPergEol will present their strategies and preliminary results of four years of research by the Istanbul branch of the German Archaeological Institute, the École Pratique des Hautes Études Paris and the Aigai excavation of Manisa University and discuss them in the light of other projects and ongoing studies on the subject in Anatolian archaeology. The idea of the Corpus is to link the publication of important books of Roman sarcophagi to the investigation of funerary landscapes and theoretical questions.

The combination of both projects aims to bridge the gap between different approaches to funerary archaeology of the ancient world. Both, images and contextual ensembles, form parts of the same social and cultural settings, but are rarely approached together. Therefore, the conference intends to stimulate new questions and cooperations by using the particulary rich funeral culture of Anatolia as a case study.
