The DAI's Research Cluster 5 („History of Archaeology“) is organizing the online conference "Research on Both Sides of the Iron Curtain - Practices and Networks" on November 17-18 2022.
The Cold War (1947-1989), a time of political tensions and geopolitical divisions, coincided with economic growth and scientific advances. Archaeological research during this period was conducted under various political, economic and infrastructural conditions. At the same time, archaeologists made use of scientific developments in other disciplines, especially chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics, statistics and computer sciences. Novel archaeological theories (e.g., processualism, post-processualism) and research techniques were introduced, interdisciplinary journals and conferences were being organized and, at least in some countries, more funds were allocated to archaeological projects and research infrastructure.
The online conference aims to explore the various facets of archaeological practices, theories and methods in Europe and beyond during the Cold War and its impact on personal networks.
