ARCHAEOZOOLOGY OF GÖBEKLİ TEPE AND BEYOND. THE HISTORY OF ARCHAEOZOOLOGICAL INVESTIGATIONS AND FURTHER WORK
The final lecture of our 2025/2026 evening lecture series is approaching. We are very pleased to welcome Dr. Stephanie Emra (Munich). In her lecture entitled "Archaeozoology of Göbekli Tepe and Beyond. The History of Archaeozoological Investigations and Further Work", she will provide insights into archaeozoological research at Göbekli Tepe and beyond, tracing the development of this field of study.
From its discovery in 1994, Göbekli Tepe has been the only excavated Pre-Pottery Neolithic A (PPNA) hunter-gatherer settlement in the upper Euphrates basin until relatively recently. Its excavation has been the sole point of reference in understanding subsistence strategies and animal symbolism prior to the beginnings of animal stockkeeping in this region. This talk summaries the archaeozoological work undertaken at Göbekli Tepe over the last 25 years, and how it has informed our understanding of this crucial period. As new excavations in the wider region, such as the new Taş Tepeler project in the Şanlıurfa province, have now taken place, this now allows us to begin to put Göbekli Tepe into a regional context. This talk will also present some initial impressions on how these new excavations reshape and extend our understanding of PPNA hunter-gatherer lifeways (Türkçe Özet).
The hybrid event will be held in English. To attend the event, please use the registration options for in-person or online participation. For in-person attendance, register by 15:00 on the day before the event.
