The establishment of a new capital poses particular challenges for urban planners. Not only must the tasks of governance be combined with the functions of a city. The new urban center should also be a symbol and emblem of a state's identity, even embody a new concept of society and a particular worldview. Recent examples range from post-1989 Berlin to the New Administrative Capital of Egypt. What solutions have architects found in the past? What do they tell us about the underlying concepts of power and representation? The fifth edition of the series ArchDebates aims to stimulate debate on architecture and urbanism as a source for investigating the structure of pre-modern societies.
La fundación de una capital plantea retos particulares para los urbanistas. No solo hay que combinar las tareas de gobernanza con las funciones de una ciudad. El nuevo centro urbano también debe ser un símbolo de la identidad de un Estado, e incluso encarnar un concepto de sociedad y una visión particular. Entre los ejemplos recientes se encuentran el Berlín posterior a 1989 y la Nueva Capital Administrativa de Egipto. ¿Qué soluciones han encontrado los arquitectos en el pasado? ¿Qué nos dicen sobre los conceptos de poder y representación?
