The post-62 CE restoration of the Forum of Pompeii: building practices, technological knowledge, and reconstruction strategies

Zum nächsten Vortrag in der Reihe Bauforschung im Wiegandhaus begrüßen wir Giacomo Casa. Er spricht zum Thema „The post-62 CE restoration of the Forum of Pompeii: building practices, technological knowledge, and reconstruction strategies".

In 62 CE, a devastating earthquake struck Pompeii, transforming the city into a vast urban construction site that placed the Forum at the center of this grand rebuilding effort, whose true scale has long been underestimated. This lecture offers a new reassessment of the restoration works carried out on the public monuments of the Forum after the earthquake. New results will be presented concerning the strategies of the post-seismic reconstruction, including construction procedures, technological knowledge, reuse practices, organization of the building sites and logistic of building material supply. These data reveal a complex and highly coordinated reconstruction process of the Forum, whose monuments were largely restored and functional by the time of the eruption of 79 CE.  

Giacomo Casa studied Archaeology at Sapienza University of Rome, specializing in the study of Classical Antiquites and Ancient Architecture. Between 2020 and 2024 he completed his PhD with a dissertation entitled “Ancient Architectural Restoration in Pompeii: A Multidisciplinary Approach,” focusing on the reconstruction of the Forum of Pompeii after the earthquake of 62 AD. Since 2021 he has been a research fellow at Sapienza University of Rome, becoming researcher in 2025, while he has been affiliated with the National Research Council since 2022. His work is currently involved in several international research projects, including archaeological and architectural investigations in Italy, Turkey, and Syria.
