Softwaretechnology/Archaeoinformatics

Softwaretechnology / Archaeoinformatics

As the second pillar of IT at the Central Scientific Services, the Department of Software Technology/Archaeoinformatics carries out digital research and development for the DAI, global archaeological research and the protection of cultural assets.

The area of responsibility of software technology includes the professional conception and production of open source specialised applications within the framework of iDAI.world and their continuous, sustainable further development.

Archaeoinformatics forms the scientific interface between archaeology, computer science/mathematics and engineering. It is firmly anchored at the DAI as one of the few research institutions worldwide. Accordingly, the department is strongly networked with interdisciplinary research in Berlin, but also throughout Germany and internationally.

In direct feedback with the DAI's research projects, departments and commissions, new methods and technologies for digital science are developed and incorporated into the further development of iDAI.world. Key technologies such as relational database systems, geoinformation systems and image-based 3D reconstruction are not only made technically available. Rather, their productive and innovative use at the DAI is promoted through needs-based and specialised training.

iDAI.world

iDAI.workd offers a broad spectrum of archaeological information. It enables the discovery of new contexts, bundles the research results of the DAI and its cooperation partners, and provides the archaeological community with free access to numerous research data.

Open Source

Innovation and research thrive the most when knowledge is shared and collaboration is encouraged. That is why we make our developments freely and openly available as far as possible. We want to make our work accessible and comprehensible to everyone and invite the entire community to use, comment on and actively contribute to our projects.

Project 'KulturGutRetter' at the ZWD-IT

Digital support for the ‘KulturGutRetter’ project is an important prerequisite. During preparation and deployment, a large amount of data is generated that needs to be managed in a structured and traceable manner. This is ensured by a sub-project.

Projects

As part of the Central Scientific Services, the Department of Software Technology / Archaeoinformatics is involved in numerous DAI projects to varying degrees. In addition to our own research and infrastructure projects, we support researchers from all departments as well as our neighbouring 'information infrastructures'-branch in the implementation of ‘digital’ research projects.
