The Octagonal Building in Pergamon. An architectural-historical enigma solved within the urban settlement of present-day Bergama.

Zum nächsten Vortrag in der Reihe Bauforschung im Wiegandhaus begrüßen wir Dr. Seçil Tezer-Altay. Sie spricht zum Thema „The Octagonal Building in Pergamon. An architectural-historical enigma solved within the urban settlement of present-day Bergama“.

Pergamon witnessed a golden age during the Roman Imperial Era, like many other cities in Asia Minor. This period was manifested by the city’s expansion towards the fertile Kaikos plain and the monuments built beyond the fortified area of the old Hellenistic capital. One of these monuments is the Octagonal Building, located immediately outside the city walls on the hill, facing towards the growing new city. Its name derives from the plan type of its basement, the only section that has survived to this day and is intertwined with 19th century residential settlement. The ancient structure is studied for the first time in the framework of the author’s dissertation project (Istanbul Technical University, co-supervised by Turgut Saner and Felix Pirson) and respective field work was conducted between 2015-2019. This presentation will focus on the rediscovery of a hidden monument, and the questions related to its function and more precise dating.

Seçil Tezer-Altay studied Architecture in Istanbul. She is employed in the Istanbul Department of the German Archaeological Institute and responsible for the conservation works in the Pergamon Excavation. Her tasks vary from the study of historical buildings to conservation projects as well as community archaeology. She received her PhD degree in the architectural history program of Istanbul Technical University, on the Octagon of Pergamon.

Der Vortrag findet um 18:00 Uhr c.t. im Gartensaal des Wiegandhauses (Eingang Peter-Lenné-Str. 28) statt.
