Overview
The 'Prile Project' is investigating the relationship between the Etruscan settlement of Vetulonia and the offshore lagoon known as Prile. As part of the project, archaeologists and geoscientists are helping to outline and understand the changes to the landscape caused by the lagoon silting up in the past and subsequent changes in how the shores were used. The aim is to gain insight into the economic networks of Vetulonia, centred around the lagoon.
Between 2018 and 2024, four excavation campaigns and three drilling campaigns were conducted, yielding significant new insights into the lagoon's extent and development, as well as that of the shoreline.
