The book describes the first archaeological evidence of a Hellenistic gymnasium excavated in Egypt. It was located in a village in the Fayum Oasis, where people with Egyptian and Hellenistic cultural backgrounds lived together. As in large cities, the gymnasium consisted of a central courtyard surrounded by an assembly hall, a dining room, and lecture rooms. A racecourse ran alongside the gymnasium. Thanks to this archaeological discovery, attested written sources of such a village gymnasium can be compared with the reality on site.
