The Sanna Branch arose from the Yemen Expedition of the German Archaeological Institute in 1978, and since 1996 has been a part of the newly-formed Orient Department. Its work covers archaeological, architectural, philological and art history research in Southwest Arabia up to and including the Islamic times. Research focuses on the themes 'The roots of ancient South Arabian civilization', 'Urban development in South Arabian Antiquity', 'Ancient technologies' and 'Pre-Islamic sacral architecture'.
