TELL Lecture by Eman H. Zidan
We are cordially inviting to a lecture in course of the "Tell!" young researchers' lecture series at the German Archaeological Institute Cairo
May 31st beginning at 6:00 pm:
Re-contextualizing, Examining and Conserving Three Coffins of Unknown Provenance from the Egyptian Museum
Eman H. Zidan (Egyptian Museum Cairo)
Three "unknown" coffins were found inside a box in the basement collection of the Egyptian Museum Cairo, without any inventories or archaeological context. The coffins are examples of the anthropoid (human-shaped) type used in the late Third Intermediate Period, decorated with simple motifs, typical scenes, and other decorations of the Late Period, suggesting the 22nd-25th dynasties as possible dates.
Non-invasive analytical techniques were used to identify the pigments, including multispectral imaging techniques, X-ray fluorescence and Raman spectroscopy. A detailed conservation study aided by CT scanning helped to investigate the structure and materials and to describe the state of preservation of the three coffins. The dating, the archaeological context and the origin of the coffins can be established based on their types, materials and features, by comparison with other similar works from the same period.
