Abendvortrag: Past and Present Research on the Late Bronze Age and Early Iron Age in Northwestern Azerbaijan

In the mid-19th century, economic interests in the Lesser Caucasus laid the foundations for archaeological research into the Late Bronze Age and Early Iron Age of north-western Azerbaijan, also known as the Xocalı-Gədəbəy culture. Since then, research into this period has continued through annual archaeological expeditions and individual scholars' initiatives. Large-scale excavations have been conducted periodically in response to major infrastructure projects, resulting in a comparatively large but under-studied material base. This lecture will outline the research history and provide insights into current attempts to gain a deeper understanding of the material culture of the region, its chronology, and its relationships with neighbouring regions of the Southern Caucasus.

The hybrid event will be held in English.
