Cluster 3 "Körper und Tod. Konzepte – Medien – Praktiken"

‘Not all disabled people are dead’ – The current state of Enabled Archaeology in the UK.

One topic in the archaeology of the body is how societies deal with bodies that do not conform to norms or have special needs. Disablement also concerns us in our archaeological practice and heritage management. The Enabled Archaeology Foundation aims to empower, enable and combat negative attitudes towards the involvement of disabled people in Heritage. The lecture by Abigail Hunt and Sarahjayne Clements of the Enabled Archaeology Foundation will cover the history of the Enabled Archaeology Foundation, disability theory, the history of disability inclusion in archaeology, barriers in the sector, overcoming barriers, and examples of inclusive practice.

Abi is a Professor of Practice and Director of MSc programmes at the University of Nottingham, Adjunct Professor at Harlaxton College, Director of the Enabled Archaeology Foundation and Chairperson for the Survey of Lincoln. Abi also runs her own heritage and education consultancy business.

Sarahjayne works as a Community Heritage Officer for a local authority and is a doctoral student at the University of Hertfordshire researching disability inclusion in archaeology and the heritage sector with a focus on chronic illness and the workplace. Sarahjayne is the networking and communications officer for the Enabled Archaeology Foundation and a member of the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists EDI committee.
