Die Abteilung Istanbul des DAI lädt herzlich zum Winckelmann Vortrag ein.
Nach der Begrüßung durch den Generalkonsul der Bundesrepublik Deutschland Herrn Johannes Regenbrecht, und dem Jahresbericht der Abteilung Istanbul des DAI durch den Direktor Prof. Dr. Felix Pirson, wird Prof. Dr. Ian Hodder (Istanbul) den Festvortrag "Çatal Höyük in Spacetime: The Impact of Detailed Dating on Understanding Social Organization" halten.

ÇATALHÖYÜK IN SPACETIME: THE IMPACT OF DETAILED DATING ON UNDERSTANDING SOCIAL ORGANIZATION

Archaeologists typically work by separating space and time; temporal change is sliced up so that spatial relations can be explored and compared. The organization of Çatalhöyük has often been discussed in this way and the site has been excavated to focus on horizontal relations. But detailed work based on Bayesian radiocarbon dating, together with study of fine layers of replastering, opens up a very different picture in which we can begin to appreciate the true relationality of spacetime. In this world things are not quite what they seem. Everything is in flux and we can start to talk about flows or strings rather than stable entities. This realization challenges the methods of archaeology and emphasizes what Karen Barad demonstrates is true of all science including particle physics - that how we measure is part of the phenomenon we study.
